The inner child of Stone Temple Pilots is Iron Maiden, and that kid just won't quit howlingNow I can’t see for the life of me how the Maiden comparison is a) derogatory or b) valid, but other critics rightly lambasted STP for aping Vedder’s trademark ‘manly man-drawl’ – a drawl still lamentably echoed by Nickleback. "Plush" devoured radio with its mix of guitar grandiosity and woolly philosophizing "Wicked Garden," another big single, waxes equally pompous. So thickly the sweat drips that when Weiland, resident shaman, gruffly mourns, "I'm half the man I used to be" ("Creep"), one shudders. With Eric Kretz bashing the skins like a Bonham manqué and axman Robert DeLeo ladling murk, Core is a testosteronefest.

To wit, Rolling Stone’s review of STP’s first album, “Core”: The band also suffered at the hands of critics. Scott Weiland’s battle with that kryptonite of late 20th century grunge proved to be the band’s greatest stumbling block and the band perennially canceled or cut short touring during their career. Eyeliner on men was not part of my universe, and, though I didn’t quite know what heroin addiction looked like, I knew enough to conclude that it must have some connection to cable television. I remember STP because Scott Weiland scared me. 3 on the Billboard 200 and produced rock hits such as 'Sex Type Thing,' 'Plush,' and 'Wicked Garden. These bands included San Diegos Stone Temple Pilots, whose 1992 debut album 'Core' made a slow, steady climb to No. I’m sure I saw others earlier, at friends houses say, but I can’t quite remember them. As grunge was enjoying its zenith in the early 1990s, a number of non-Seattle-based bands rose to stardom as they were lumped into the scene. Cable was doubly wasteful in my father’s eyes because not only was it a needless thirty-dollar luxury but it also threatened to prevent me from being otherwise productive (playing outside, doing homework, cleaning room, you remember the litany…). I was painfully aware both of the fact that we could afford, but still didn't buy, cable and of the fact that cable was the only way to watch music videos. The deluxe edition includes several bonus cuts, including live versions of tracks from the new album and their classic hit “Vasoline. My father, grateful though I am to him for my first concert (the Stones), tempered his Jagger with Weber. “Fast As I Can” rocks out like Bad Company and Aerosmith finding their way down the L.A. “Bagman” sounds like a power-pop band turning the amps way up. “Dare If You Dare” has power-ballad scripted onto its pounding sorrow. Whether it’s the brash attack of “Between the Lines” or the retro-boogie of “Huckleberry Crumble” and “Hazy Daze,” STP are practically a course in classic-rock history. Singer Scott Weiland can punch forth like the rock frontman he so naturally is and the DeLeo brothers provide him with his strongest backing in years. Reunited after years of estrangement, STP sound like the perfect hard rock unit. The group’s pop appeal while maintaining its harder edges made them that rarest of groups in the ‘90s: one that embraced the rock stardom that other bands professed to hate. Stone Temple Pilots initially angered the grunge elite for finding ways to turn the angst into surefire radio hits.
